For most people learning English is a means to an end. English is the vehicle by which you will get a new job, move to a new country, study another subject and move on with your career. As this is the case, use it to find out more about your work, study and the country you are moving to. In this way you will be learning really important and useful information and improving your English too!

Literature is a great gateway to language practice. Read your favourite stories in English. There are lots of shorter versions for English language students. You should read these for enjoyment, not study so forget the dictionary and find a book that you can read easily. Do this for fun and you'll be amazed at how much you will improve your vocabulary and reading skills without any effort!

If you don't speak you can't improve your speaking. Practising alone in your bedroom is only of limited value. Gapfillers members have the chance to find speaking buddies on the site and they can practice with each other on Skype. This is a great way of getting some regular practice. Find a Gapfillers buddy who is at the same level and needs the same things as you!

'Repetition is the mother of skill' don't worry about doing the same exercises over again, there is no such thing in English learning as 'we've already done that'. You use the same words over and over in your own language don't you?

Students often say they use subtitles but this is distracting and they are not able to get much English language input. Here's a tip - use English language subtitles instead of those in your own language then you have double the chance of exposure to English and it won't spoil the film!

Tip sixteen: Try and read something every day. Reading exposes you to new vocabulary and re-enforces grammar structure. It doesn't matter what you choose (use your travel time to do it) a newspaper, magazine, tube advert or story book. Don't worry about words you don't know - if you understand the general idea that's fine. The more you do this the more you will understand!

Be honest - 'I want to be able to stand up and present well', or 'I want to be able to read a book with ease' - what ever it is define it and then work out the steps (or ask your teacher or us here on Gapfillers) for help to get there!
