The diary of a 21st century nobody - Christmas looms!

xmas pud

Aagh! It's almost Christmas and I haven't even thought about it! Well, actually that's not true. I have thought about it, and this is the thought - 'it comes around far too quickly and, for a celebration that lasts for 3 days in December, we start our preparation for it far too early!' There. That's my view!

However, it is also true that I have left one thing rather late....Christmas pudding making. Ideally, this should be done in early November so that the pudding can be left to 'mature' as the flavours develop. You can even 'doctor' it with the occasional dram of whisky or measure of brandy in the weeks up to Christmas.

My Mum used to prepare her cakes and puddings for Christmas on a weekend day so that all the family could stir the mixture and make a wish. (Ha! I might just wish that MY children were around at the weekend in order to stir my pudding mixture!!) Then, she would make little 'taster' buns for us to try - they were little portions of the mixture which she spooned into bun cases and cooked for us. A little taste of Christmas that came early, and filled us all with excited anticipation for the season to come...

Once the cake and pudding were cooked they were lovingly wrapped in cloth and placed in a cool, dark place waiting to be served on Christmas Day. These days it's a supermarket mass-produced, glutinous pile, not-so-lovingly wrapped in foil and cardboard, bought on the 23rd of December, and popped into the microwave to be 'nuked' to the limits of it's existence leaving it so hot as to scald your tastebuds and leave you severly burnt and decidedly dissatisfied! There is nothing homely or loving about it's preparation, cooking or consumption.... I have to resurrect the old tradition, and make my own. I do not have as much time as I would like to 'doctor' it, and it will not really have enough time to mature as long as it should, but never mind, it will be lovingly prepared and cooked.

What a shame there's only me in this house that eats it!!
