Diary of a 21st Century nobody - Don't miss a trick!

We had some very sad news from the riding stables this week. One of my daughter's favourite horses was injured in the field and had to be put down.....It fell to me to impart the sad news in as sympathetic and caring a way as I could. This doubly difficult just now because the riding school is also selling her favourite pony, too.

These matters are never easy to handle; whilst the initial emotion is sadness and hurt, and understandably so, anyone who wishes to work with animals needs to be aware that these things do happen and have to be borne as part of everyday business and living. I wanted to get the balance just right.

To be honest, I was very upset myself. He was only a young horse and we had both ridden him, each of us learning so much from that experience. This was going to be tough, but as we drove to Pony Club I knew it had to come from me and not from a clumsy outburst by one of the other children at the stables; so I drove slowly and spoke gently as I gave her the bad news....I'm not going to regale you with the whole incident. Suffice it to say, she was a sad little rider that evening.....

The following day I decided that it would be wise to speak with her about how, if she were to work with horses as she wants to, such matters can and do occur and have to be overcome, "You see," I ended the conversation, "that this is one reason why your Dad and I are reluctant to let you have your own pony just now. You have to invest so much time and love and, in your case, as you are a growing girl, you will outgrow it one day and have to move on."

She sat very quietly and I walked away to let her think it over carefully and alone. As I reached the door she called softly to me and I turned a sympathetic face to her.... "In fact," she said steadily "it would be better if you did get me a pony now because, as this is the second one I've had to say goodbye to, it would be in my interests to practice my goodbyes more - and with the way things are going, if we don't get a pony soon all the ones I like will be gone"...........

Ha!! She doesn't miss a trick, that girl!!!
