Japan’s shock at Tokyo stabbings

Jun 9 – Passers-by prayed and placed flowers on a busy Tokyo shopping street on Monday where seven people were killed the day before in a stabbing rampage.

The stabbings follow a string of similar incidents in recent months, shocking Japan and sparking talk of failing communities and declining morality in a country proud of its low crime rate.

Police are continuing to question a 25-year-old man arrested at the scene. Investigators are probing reports that the suspect posted messages on the Internet, warning of his intention to kill in the hours leading up to his violent spree in Tokyo’s Akihabara shopping district.

Helen Long reports.
