Brainstorming the Task 1 letter in GT IELTS – Lesson 16 – suggestions

Here are some suggestions for what to include in this letter:

You live in a room in college which you share with another student. However, there are many problems with this arrangement and you find it very difficult to work.

Write a letter to the accommodation officer at the college. In the letter,

– describe the situation
– explain your problems and why it is difficult to work
– say what kind of accommodation you would prefer

• This is a formal letter to an ‘authority’ – you don’t know them. You probably don’t know the name though you might have a name to write to.
• There are 3 parts to the letter – describe the situation, what are the problems, where would you like to go
• Your preferred outcome would be to have the accommodation office move you to an accommodation of your choice (a single room probably)
• The situation is you share a room and there are problems which are affecting your study
• The problems could be noise, bringing friends around all the time, different timetables so in and out at different times making it hard to study, don’t get on so lots of arguments, being untidy and never clearing things away, not respecting your private space, expecting you to clean and keep the room neat etc… you may have other ideas – that is fine
• Think about how you would feel and what you really want in this situation – probably a single room far away from this roommate!
• Get as many ideas as you can – you don’t have to use them all but you will find the ones that you can best express and then you can leave the other ideas. Try to construct a real, believable situation that you can describe well and in good English
