1 Students should be aware that it can be unnecessary to read every word on every page of textbooks, and should become adept at identifying and taking out those ideas which are relevant.

Vocabulary: adept – very skilled or proficient. Like good / bad / excellent / poor / adept / proficient / skilled the preposition that follows is at – He’s very adept at mending cars / at carpentry.
2 Attendance at lectures and seminars is monitored, and you should expect to be summoned to explain more than an occasional absence.

3 You are advised to keep to deadlines as each assignment is set, and to hand in your work promptly.
Pronunciation – Did you hear the ‘s‘ sound on the noun ‘advice‘ in the title, which on the verb heard here is more like a ‘z‘? Were you surprised by what ‘assignment‘ sounded like?

Vocabulary: assignment – task or duty which is set for completion as part of a job or course of study
4 You may be a night-owl rather than a lark, but staying up all night to finish work is impossible to maintain for very long, and is not recommended.

5 You may on occasions ask your tutor for an extension, but this will affect your subsequent workload, so that you are busier than you should be.
Spellings: extension; affect (verb); subsequent; workload (one word); busier
Vocabulary: subsequent – adj – following in time – eg She talked to her teacher about the mistakes she kept making and her subsequent work was far better. (i.e. her work after that)
workload – the amount of work to be done by someone or something. Eg Your daily workload is quite light as long as you deal with correspondence promptly and don’t let it all pile up (i.e. become excessive).
6 We remind students that during examinations you are not allowed to talk to or help other students in any way.
Identifying meanings: Did you write in any way, meaning at all? This is not the same as ‘anyway‘. Anyway is used 1) to indicate that a statement explains or supports a previous statement. Eg Apparently the story in the newspaper is not true. There’s no evidence that it is, anyway. 2) to mean regardless / nevertheless / even so – eg He doesn’t enjoying watching athletics, but he’s coming anyway.
7 All work submitted must be your own. Any student found guilty of any form of plagiarism or cheating will be punished.
Spellings: submitted – did you get the double ‘t‘? guilty; plagiarism
Vocabulary: plagiarism – uncountable noun – the act of plagiarizing – the copying of another person’s ideas, text, or other creative work, and presenting it as your own, especially without permission
