Animal sounds

DOGS

bark/ woof

yelp – (when in pain)

whimper / cry – (when anxious or excited)

Howl – (when wanting attention, some will do this when music or singing is heard!)

growl – ( a warning to ‘keep your distance’ )

pant – (laboured breathing when they have exercised, also used when they are sweating, it helps to cool them down. A panting dog requires rest, shade and probably water)

CATS

Meow

Purr- (a low soft rumble from the chest denoting contentment)

mew – (the sounds kittens make)

yowl – (a precursor to fighting)

hiss/ spit – (a warning to back away)

HORSES

neigh

whinny – a call due to anxiety or distress

whicker – a soft, low sound when content or happy

snort – heavy breathing when working hard

BIRDS

ducks – quack

songbirds – tweet, twitter, warble, chirrup

hens – cluck

chicks – cheep

rooks and crows – caw, cackle

swans – the mute swan makes no sound, but is said to do so just before it dies- hence the term ‘swan-song’ ( a final deed)

PIGS

oink

snuffle – the sound made when they sniff and forage for food on the ground

COWS

moo

lowing -a softer, gentler sound of contentment

bellow – a deep, loud call to warn of danger, or as a warning to keep distance
