Childcare Qualifications in the UK

The most recognised qualification for people who look after young children is the Diploma in Childcare & Education, which used to be called an NNEB. It is a full-time, two-year course covering the care of children from birth to the age of seven. Students study health, hygiene and first aid, together with the practice and theory of childcare and play and are trained to assess young children’s physical, social, educational, intellectual & emotional needs.

There are many different childcare qualifications, certificates and NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) from levels 1 to 4. The diploma is the equivalent of an NVQ level 3.
The BTEC in Children’s Care, Learning and Development is a more academic qualification, with a focus on teaching, nursing and social work.
A Higher National Certificate (an HNC) is similar to a BTEC, and is a UK higher education qualification, equating to about 2 years of a university course.

An ADCE is an Advanced Diploma in Childcare & Education for experienced professionals, and equivalent to a one-year postgraduate qualification such as a Masters.
