(If you considered Martha and Belinda Cratchit two victims of poverty and neglect you were wrong, in that although they are certainly poor, the family in which they are raised is a happy and caring one. In morality plays and stories characters are often given the names of their main characteristics – Beauty, Kindness, Greed, or Courage, and Ignorance and Want are two examples of this in Dickens’s work.)
