Vocabulary
Sometimes we use the expression ‘Don’t give up the day job!’ to mean someone’s dream to do something different or risky is not yet a good reason to abandon all other sorts of security – such as an ordinary job – the ‘day job’. We use the phrase to be humorous too, to indicate that we think some plan is crazy.
eg "He’s invented a new kind of electric car." "I hope he hasn’t given up the day job!!" = I can’t see this being successful / That sounds ridiculous / impossible to me.
