Conjunctions
The following conjunctions are used to express contrast
These words express simple differences:
while, but, whereas
- I like horror films but my sister likes comedies.
- Vegetarians will eat eggs whereas vegans won’t touch them.
- My husband enjoys lobster while I can’t stand it!
Other conjunctions express an ‘opposing’ idea
although, though, but, even though (for emphasis)
- Although I enjoyed the job, the salary just wasn’t enough.
- I learnt a lot from my last job though I was glad to change.
- I would like to help you but I’m afraid I can’t.
- My boss didn’t appreciate the work I put into his presentation even though I stayed late to complete it!
