Wellbeing
Wellbeing by Cecilia Brabin

It clearly states upon my label
to plant me where to grow I’m able
But they have stuck me by the wall
and this just will not do at all.
Why have they put me in this place?
I can’t feel the sun upon my face
The wind is whistling, cold and harsh
My roots feel planted in a marsh.
I think the instructions were quite clear
and still they’ve gone and stuck me here
Are they expecting me to thrive?
I’ll be lucky just to stay alive.
I imagine they’ll give occasional feeds
but I’m a living thing with other needs
that extend beyond a place to be
where they can sit and look at me.
If they wanted me to flourish
I need nature, nurture, nourish,
an environment where I can figure
in something altogether bigger.
So take me from this awful place
give me more light, more earth, more space
and I can surpass the promise on my label,
if I’m planted where, to thrive, I’m able.
