The obvious place to begin is in the FA Barclays Premiership where superstar Wayne Rooney returned to form for Manchester United, scoring three times in Saturday’s 4-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers. The win has lifted Manchester United back to the top of the league, ahead of nearest rivals Chelsea, who won 2-0 away to Sheffield United.

Despite holding an amazing 91% possession of the ball in the second half, Arsenal struggled this weekend as they were held 1-1 at home by Everton. In contrast England’s other big club, Liverpool, look to have finally got their season going: three first half goals were enough for them to defeat Aston Villa 3-1 at Anfield.

At the bottom of the league, West Ham finally managed a victory after a run of eight successive defeats. A goal from 40-year-old Teddy Sheringham inspiring the home side to 2-1 win over Blackburn. Whilst two goalless draws for two of the bottom three clubs, Watford at home to Spurs and Charlton away to Newcastle, compounded a bad weekend for fellow strugglers Sheffield United.

Even at this early stage of the season the relegation battle looks set to be between these three clubs as Newcastle and West Ham look likely to win enough games to remain in the top division.

At the other end of the table there appears to be a two horse race for the title, as Manchester United and Chelsea keep on winning, but watch out for Liverpool and Arsenal as the season gets going.
