2 She says she was considered ‘posh’ and described as ‘aloof’.
3 That 1) some had never been away from home, even to London, and had never been away from their parents
and that 2) the trip was a huge experience, and a bit of a culture shock.
4 After arriving at Nairobi airport – it took them 2 days to get the remote area where their project was based.
5 Firstly the 2 days safari, then the village project building a school and then 4 days’ trekking.
6 In general the boys were stronger and fitter than the girls – and Laura mentions that some of the girls had been smokers before going on the trip, and had given up smoking; they struggled the most with the physical demands of the work.
7 She describes it as amazing, different from anything she’d seen until then.
8 The children were over-familiar – forward – whereas the adults were more distant, particularly concerning people walking into their villages, but shy, curious and friendly.
9 No, not at all – she says it was really hard work.
10 No, not really – she agrees it is probably just a one-off – she doesn’t see where she could fit in another such project once she is involved with university and paying for her studies.
11 She will remember what we should be striving for and should be sorting out, that there’s something wrong with the world – ("something can’t be right") that there is such a level of inequality between people’s circumstances.
12 You find out a lot about others and a lot about yourself.
