Let’s begin with some tips and advice
- One type of this question – is where you are given a stem which needs completing from the choices given.
- A second type of multiple choice question is an actual question where the choice form the answer.
- A third and more difficult question, might be in the negative asking you what is not said.
- Finally you may be asked to select two or three choices from a list.
- Make sure you understand exactly what you have to do.
- The main difference between these questions and those in the listening is the speed at which the answer is delivered – obviously you cannot go back and listen again (although in your practice you MUST to make sure you get the answer correct). This is why it is important to practise.
- Be organised when you prepare for these questions there is a lot to do in 30 seconds.
- But be flexible too – your prediction may not be correct so you have to be ready to change it.
- Working with these questions and analysing them at this stage before your exam will make you become more confident about them when you face them in the exam.
- Remember it is small improvements like these that will make the larger improvements to your overall band. Don’t just go through test after test it won’t help you get much better – try to improve each type of questions and really concentrate on the detail.
- Also – what you measure improves so keep checking your answers and then go again and see if you can improve each type of exercise.
Key skills to develop:
Practise
- Look at a range of multiple choice questions form section one through to section 4, can you see how they get more difficult – keep analysing then and soon you will find even section 4 questions much easier.
- Match the questions with the answers without listening to the tape – understand why this is the correct answer – what must be said fir this to be right? Then after you have predicted what is going to be said listen and see if you are right.
- Don’t be afraid to do question over and over – it helps you to understand how they are structured – listening exercises are not so easy to find so doing them over is not a problem.
- As a result of dedicated practice using these techniques, you will find that when you face unfamiliar questions you will be better ready to tackle them.
