Let’s begin with some tips and advice
- Again this is an exercise that you can do well.
- Skim the questions to get a good idea about what will be said.
- Look carefully at any examples – these are models for the answers you must give.
- The examples can also help you to focus each answer.
- Sometimes there will be two answers – make sure you are clear and look at the relationship between them.
- The answers may also be in a short list – check exactly what type of exercise you have – don’t make silly mistakes.
- Look carefully at the grammar of the answer – check the example for this first.
- Once you understand the grammar then you know what kind of word you need – if you don’t realise this then you may lose a mark by putting the wrong form of the word.
- Look for nouns/words that help organise the sentence – things like causes, types, factors etc.. listening for these words (or synonyms/prarphrases will pinpoint the answer.
- As with all the other parts of the IELTS, it is important to practise these things and become good at them BEFORE you take the exam.
Key skills to develop:
Practise
- Don’t just keep going over the whole test. Practise individual sections and questions – running whole marathons every day will not make you better at running marathons – it’s the small incremental things that improve your skill
- Keep listening to lots of things – get exposed to a wide range of topics, voices and accents
- Look on Gapfillers for gapfilling exercises (there are some below)
