Lesson 45 – Matching

  • Matching is another type of exercise in IELTS listening and it can take many forms – it’s well worth considering this.

 

 

Let’s begin with some tips and advice

 

  1. You can be asked to match anything from items to a diagram or graph to a series of evaluations.
  2. Sometimes you will be asked to evaluate what someone (an author or scientist for example mentioned in the listening) believes or has said.
  3. Where you have names or titles of books or projects it will be easier to listen for the information, BUT don’t be complacent, if this is a section four it may still not be straightforward and may require some use of paraphrase or synonym.
  4. If you are asked to evaluate items and then put them on a scale you will need to look carefully at what is said about them.
  5. Where you have a scale look at the top/bottom or first/last to get a good idea of how the range works.
  6. Try to isolate each item as you listen and keep looking at the table.
  7. As with all listening exercises make sure you look carefully at the questions and rubric, these are there to guide you.
  8. Break up the task into individual pieces of information and then listen for them one by one – they will probably be in a sequence.
  9. Pay special attention if this is section 4 (or even 3) just in case the items are mentioned more than once as you’ll need to choose the right one.
  10. Check to see if you can use things more than once.
  11. Be organised and focus well.
