Let’s begin with some tips and advice
- Labelling applies to various types of exercise – as well as maps and plans there are diagrams, graphs and bar charts.
- Use the same techniques mentioned in lesson 43 for all of these types of question.
- Word limit and grammar are important so make sure you are aware of these when you prepare for the listening.
- Refer to Writing Task 1 language as some of this may be useful in these types of questions.
- With graphs make sure that you understand the values on the axes so that you can listen for the numbers.
- Use all the information on the charts and graphs to locate the information as you listen – this will help you to find the correct answers.
- Look for patterns in the data just like we discussed in the maps – make predictions and then test these.
- With flowcharts, make sure that you understand the information and the direction that this is following – seeing the steps will help you to follow the information in the listening.
- Pay attention to the arrows in the chart so you know can see and then follow this as you listen.
- Remember that the words in the questions may not be exactly the same as those you hear, especially in the later sections – these may be paraphrases or synonyms.
