Lesson 41 – Summaries

Today we’ll look at summaries.

Let’s begin with some tips and advice

 

1. A summary can be a whole section or if they are in section 4 more complex – such as part of the lecture
2. Look at the general headings and any sub-headings as these will help to give you information about the topic and what will be said.
3. You need good prediction skills for this type of exercise.
4. You also need to skim the summary and think about which words will fit in the spaces and get a general idea of the information.
5. Scan for key words and underline these then use them to locate answers.
6. Don’t forget to use some instinct and common sense.
7. Remember that you have just 30 seconds so you need to work quickly to get as much information as possible.
8. Use the headings and sub-headings as your main source of help in this type of question especially if it s section 4.
9. Try to keep a little ahead as you listen so that you don’t miss anything.
10. Try to predict the type of word you will need and check these as you listen.

• Look through your listening material for this type of question and concentrate on getting good as answering them.

 

• Try to complete the summaries using just the headings and sub-headings and the other language around the exercise!

 

• Then check the listening and see how many you got right.

 

• Keep listening to lots of things – get exposed to a wide range of topics, voices and accents
