Lesson 59 – Taking stock

Sometimes it is good to stop and reflect and in the next two lessons we will be doing just that.

Firstly we’re going to evaluate where you are with your English generally (tomorrow – IELTS)

Let’s begin with some tips and advice

  1. Let’s begin by re-visiting the test you did on Day 1 – Can you do this again and compare your result with before?
  2. Now consider your other skills – reading, writing listening and speaking – how do you think these compare with when you begin this programme?
  3. Do you think that you have improved your vocabulary?
  4. Do you feel more confident about the exam now?
  5. Which areas of your English do you think that you really need to improve upon? Do you have a strategy for doing this?
  6. Did you make a list of the mistakes that you know you keep doing in your writing or your speaking? If not then do this today – hopefully it will not be too long!
  7. Are there any parts of the reading and listening that are still giving your problems? Go back to those lessons and check out the advice and try some more of these using the information in that lesson
  8. Choose a podcast online and listen to it without interruption and make notes about it – really concentrate on this.
  9. Choose a reading exercise online and do the same – don’t look up any words and just use all the language around any unfamiliar words to try and get the meaning – make notes about the main topic/s.
  10. Now record a summary of both the podcast and the reading text – talk about what you have learned from them.
  11. Finally write a summary of both the podcast and the text. Really concentrate on doing this in your best English. The summaries don’t have to be long. Post them on the sharing blog.

If you don’t use English every day then consider finding a speaking partner here on Gapfillers. I asked you all at the beginning if you wanted to share Skype names but only 2 people stepped forward – this is an opportunity there are people on this programme who could be a speaking partner. Let me know and I can circulate Skype names (in this group only)
