Letter Vocabulary – Lesson 18
Openings and matching closings:
- Dear Sir/Madam (if you don’t know the person or of the letter is to a company or organisation) you should close with Yours faithfully
- Dear Miss/Ms/Mrs/Mr Albright (can be semi formal or formal)where you know the name you should close with Yours sincerely,
- Dear Jenny – would be a semi-formal letter to someone you know so you should still use Dear and finish with Yours sincerely or Regards or something more informal like See you Soon
- Hi Sam/Sarah – this would be informal and you can finish with See you Soon, Best wishes, Best Regards
Openings:
- I am writing to tell/inform you … (formal/semi formal)
- With reference to a/your ……. (formal)
- I hope you’re well/ How are you? It was good to hear from you, I’m so happy that you are….. (informal
There are more words that you can choose but what is important is the you KNOW HOW TO USE THEM so choose a selection that you are comfortable with and make sure you practise how to use them and when to use them. Once you are able to use these well every time than they should form part of the vocabulary you will use in th exam.
