Making pancakes – vocabulary
wedge – a triangular-shaped piece, especially of food – eg a wedge of cheese
sift – verb – put flour, sugar, etc. through a sieve (= a wire net shaped like a bowl) to break up large pieces
sieve – noun, rhymes with ‘give’ – a tool consisting of a wood, plastic or metal frame with a wire or plastic net fixed to it. You use it either to separate solids from a liquid, or you rub larger solids through it to make them smaller.

a whisk – a kitchen utensil, made from stiff wire loops fixed to a handle, used for whipping (or a mechanical device with the same function).

lump – noun – a piece of a solid substance, usually with no particular shape
a spatula – noun – a cooking utensil with a wide flat blade which is not sharp, used especially for lifting food out of pans
elusive – adj – difficult to find, catch or achieve
a wodge – informal noun – a thick piece or a large amount of something:
eg a wodge of cake; I’ve got a huge wodge of work to do.
kitchen paper / kitchen roll – soft, absorbent paper usually used for cleaning up in the kitchen
to smear – verb – spread a liquid or a thick substance over a surface
a ladle – a very big spoon with a long handle and a deep cup-shaped part, used especially for serving soup.in one go – in a single action
a palette knife – noun – a knife with a wide thin blade, a rounded end and no sharp edge, used to mix paints together and also to spread soft substances when cooking
flip – verb – turn quickly
a pan / fish slice – a kitchen utensil which has a wide flat blade with long holes in it, used for lifting and turning food while cooking
stack – noun – a pile of things arranged one on top of another 2) informal a large amount: eg He’s got a stack of work to do by tomorrow. We’ve stacks of time.
simmer – verb – cook something liquid, or something with liquid in it, at a temperature slightly below boiling
