Memorandum 2 Key and notes
MEMORANDUM
TO: John Crane
FROM: Ruth Marshall
DATE: 25 July 2008 / July 25th 2008 / 25.07.08
REF:
We need to start looking for staff for our new centre in Kendal. It is due to open 1 January 2009 (or 1st January 2009 / January 1st 2009 / 01/01/09).
To start with we will need a centre manager, a deputy and four fitness instructors. The first job must be to appoint the manager who would then have the opportunity to choose other staff.
I would like you to advertise the manager’s job straight away. HR has a copy of the job brief. Please make sure you send a copy of the job brief to each of our other centres – it is (or it’s / or .It is) quite possible that some of our present staff would like to apply.
I definitely want to hold the interviews by the end of October.
We haven’t yet decided on a name for the new centre. When we opened our last centre in Lancaster we ran a competition amongst our staff to choose the name. I thought we might do the same thing again. We could offer a cash prize for the winner – what (or .What) do you think?
Note various business terms in this memo:
Vocabulary
appoint s.o. to a post = give someone a job
HR = Human Resources – plural noun – the department of an organization that deals with finding new employees, keeping records about all the organization’s employees, and helping them with any problems
a job brief = a description of a job / post
hold interviews – arrange times for and carry out interviews
decide on = choose
amongst = among
a cash prize = a sum of money won in a competition, lottery, quiz, etc
Spellings
definitely is a word which is commonly misspelt
Guessing the spellings of names and places:
John / Jon Crane – you might have written Crayne as a guess. Jon is a shortened form of Jonathan / Jonathon, and is also a variation of John
Ruth Marshall – if you wrote Ruth Marshal / Marshell as a guess that would make sense
Kendal – Kendel or Kendle would be an understandable guess
Lancaster is fairly obvious, I hope
