Module 1 – Introduction and orientation

Welcome to week one of your Business E-learning course!

You will spend much of this week familiarising yourself with the site and the areas you will need to use most for your study programme.

Let’s begin by taking a test!

Follow this link to the test. It is multiple choice and in 4 sections. You should try and do each part of the test. Some things you will find quite easy but it is true that even the most advanced students make elementary mistakes!

At the end of each section you should record your score in your Gapfillers learning Diary. You can repeat sections if you like and record your scores.

The answers give a short explanation about the area of grammar tested. Record any that are incorrect as these will tell you the areas of grammar you need to revise.

Now find the following areas

1. My Account (My Networks) – you should find a welcome message here – send a reply to the network
2. Now go back to the home page and find Gapfillers latest – find today’s exercises and try Today’s News Bulletin – how did you get on? You can subscribe to the RSS feed if you like to see each exercise as it goes live!
3. Now go back to the Home page again. Go to Member Home – on the left-hand-side. This is where all the language training material is stored. Find Grammar and Usage. Go into the index and find an exercise on prepositions – try this. Don’t forget to record the name of the exercise and your score in your learning diary! Look for your score in the quizzes section of My Account
4. Finally, find Fun Stuff, have a look at this week’s joke (I hope it’s a funny one!). You can find lots of jokes about business here in the index. Have a look, choose your favourite and record it in your portfolio. See if you can tell it to someone tomorrow at work!

Let’s try out some Reading and Listening exercises!

1. Go to Reading and Texts. On the right you’ll see Reading latest, these are the most recent exercises added to the section. Choose any one and try it. Don’t forget to record the exercise and your score in your portfolio.
2. Go to the Listening Section and do exactly the same.
3. Now we’ll try a vocabulary exercise. Go to the Vocabulary Section and repeat the same process. Record all your work in your learning diary.

How about some writing?

1. As before, go to the Writing Section and choose an exercise from Writing latest in the blue box. Record the name and your score. You should now be building up a picture of your progress.
2. Some active writing next. Look at the Wiki, (in Member Home). You will see a few topics there. We’re going to write a short description of a place and add a picture. You need to do this in My Account.

• Upload a picture (small about 200 pixels).
• Go to my pages, chose New Page,
• If you want to add a picture upload it first into Picture library
• Choose wiki, write the name of your place
• Write a short description in page text
• Add your photo
• Tick the live box and save

Now you’re done!

Look at any other sections (Poetry or Short Stories) or try any other exercise if you have time but don’t forget to record your scores and comments.
