Module 12 – Socialising – Part 2

In this module we will look some more at the language used for socialising

You will practise the language you need in social situations and look at some of the ways in which people socialise and spend their spare time in the UK

The grammar focus for this module is social language

Each session is approximately 1 hour of work.

Session 1

Let’s begin this module by looking at some grammar:

Social language

  1. Complete the following exercises, expressing surprise Ex 1 Record your score in your portfolio. You can do the exercises as many times as you like.
  2. Now we’re going to look at a reading exercise about Hadrian’s Wall a wall built by the Roman between England and Scotland and a popular tourist place in England. Read the article carefully and answer the questions. Don’t forget to record your score!
  3. Here is an exercise on the vocabulary of the home. Write down and learn any words you don’t know.
  4. Finally we will look at an intensive listening exercise. This features a very special ‘barmaid’.

Session 2

We’re going to look at some listening in this session.

  1. Try this listening exercise – This is a look at tennis and Wimbledon. Remember to record your score.
  2. Grammar – let’s look at more social language.Some social phrases to use at parties. Ex 1 and Ex 2. Do the exercises as often as you wish and record your scores.
  3. Now for some writing practice. This is about a magazine called ‘Private Eye’ which is a satirical magazine. Listen and write them down. Pay attention to correct spelling.
  4. Finally, a vocabulary exercise on homophones (words that sound the same but have different meanings).

 

Session 3

Now we’re going to try a longer exercise on reading.

  1. This writing exercise talks about getting workmen in to complete jobs.
  2. We’re now going to look at a reading exercise about food. Do the exercise as many times as you wish. Don’t forget to record your answers.
  3. Here is some vocabulary associated with rest and sleep!
  4. Finally, some grammar – a few idioms.

Session 4

This is the final session of this module.

  1. We’re going to begin with a listening exercise about rugby – another popular sport in the UK: Then have a go at the writing exercise
  2. Here is another grammar exercise – some common informal expressions.
  3. Let’s look at how to do ‘small talk’
  4. You are now going to write down some invitations an acceptances for different types of events formal and informal. You can find the exercise for this under ‘documents’ in Member Home. Don’t forget to send this to your Skype teacher and upload it to your portfolio.
