Module 9 – Using Emails and Texts

In this module we will practise the language used in emails and text messages. You will learn about the kind of language that is appropriate to use in this media and accepted conventions in an English language situation. The grammar focus for this module is Good English Style |
Each session is approximately 1 hour of work.
Session 1
Let’s begin this module by looking at some grammar:
Good English style
1.Complete the following exercises Ex 1 and Ex 2 on avoiding repetition. Record your score in your portfolio. You can do the exercises as many times as you like.
2.Now for some reading – Email! Life in the 21st century! Do you recognise this scenario?
3.Here is a vocabulary exercise on collocations with computers. Collocations are common in many areas of business and it is useful to memorise these so that you know which words are always combined. Make sure you write down any you don’t know so you can learn them.
4.Finally we will try an email writing exercise. Can you get all the information to write this email?!

Session 2
We’re going to tackle some reading in this session.
1.Have a look at this exercise on writing the first email to a contact. Have you done this before? Did you do it like this? Remember to write everything up in your portfolio..
2.Grammar – let’s look at choosing the correct form of the words in Ex 1 and Ex 2. Do the exercises as often as you wish and record your scores.
3.Now for a bit of fun! Here is a vocabulary exercise about text message language. See if you can manage to identify the meanings. Many people feel that such language is dangerous to language development. Do you agree? You can discuss these ideas in your Skype lesson.
4.Finally we will look at a short news bulletin. selling twitter names as street names in Palestine to make money. An innovative idea! You can discuss this with your Skype teacher.
Session 3
In this session we are going to look at more telephone language and listen to some people on the phone
1. We’re going to begin with another writing exercise. This one is a follow-up email to a contact and builds on the exercise we did earlier in session 2.
2. Go to this reading exercise about text messaging. This explains some of the dangers to young people of using these short forms of communication. How do you feel about it? Does it tally with the points you discussed in your Skype lesson?
3. Grammar focus. Here are some more ways of avoiding repetition in your language use. Ex1 and Ex2
4. Now for some listening practice. You will hear Richard Evans talk about his work with technology and how this led him to begin looking at how technology could help businesses in the developing world. His discovery is interesting.

Session 4
This is the final session of this module.
1.We’ll start with a little more grammar. Do some more practice on good English style. Here are some words to use when emphasising something Ex1, identifying negativity Ex 2, Can you use apostrophes correctly? It is an irritation if you can’t. Check your knowledge of this – Ex 3
2. Look at this article on the merits on sms text marketing over email marketing. Do you have any experience of this? What do you think about the writer’s opinion? How would this work in your country?
3.Here is an email message.What has gone wrong? Can you correct it to make it more acceptable? Do this as a post on your Blog in Member Home. You can get your teacher to check it before you publish it if you like.
You can discuss any issues with this unit with your teacher and remember to record these in your portfolio too.
