Module Two – The world of Work

In this module we will look at general language around the world of work.

You will hear people talking about their jobs and practise vocabulary useful to the world of work.

The grammar focus for this module is using present and past tenses

 

There are 4 sessions in this week plus your two speaking sessions – you can choose when you want to do these sessions but it is a good idea to try and do something every day. You can split any session over two days – record this in your learning diary. Each session is approximately 2 hours of work.

 

Session 1

Let’s begin this module by looking at some grammar:

Present Simple and Present continuous

  1. Complete the following exercises Ex 1 and Ex 2 Record your score in your learning diary. You can do the exercises as many times as you like.
  2. Now listen to a short news item about Richard Branson, a UK businessman and his aspiration for space travel. You may need to listen to this a few times.
  3. Here is an exercise on the vocabulary of work. They are all idioms. Make sure you write down any you don’t know so you can memorise them.
  4. Finally we will try a short writing exercise.Doctors and DIY (DIY means ‘Do it yourself’)

Session 2

We’re going to tackle some reading in this session.

  1. Have a look at this reading exercise The toughest job in the world What do you think that job might be? I think you’ll be surprised! Remember to record your score.
  2. Grammar – let’s look at present perfect tense. This is always an area which students find difficult. Ex 1 and Ex 2. Do the exercises as often as you wish and record your scores.
  3. Now for a bit of fun! Here is a song about a world of work that has disappeared. It describes life in Newcastle on the River Tyne. Some good vocabulary and use of tenses here!
  4. Finally a short news bulletin – The Best Job in the World. Listen as many times as you need to to answer the questions.

 

Session 3

You’ve done some listening so far but we’re going to try a longer exercise on listening now.

  1. Go to this listening exercise Good Day at the Office Dear? You will hear an interview about someone with a very unusual job.
  2. Grammar focus is on mixed tenses. Ex 1 and Ex 2. About finding treasure. Do them as many times as you wish. Don’t forget to record your answers.
  3. Have a look now at some special vocabulary used in the office – Jargon in the workplace.
  4. Finally another News bulletin about the issue of child labour – a hot topic today.

Session 4

This is the final session of this module.

  1. We’ll start with a little more grammar. Do the final exercise in the tenses series. Now, you can choose: more practice on present perfect, more practice on present tense or some past perfect
  2. You are now going to listen to Fernand describe the working day.
  3. You are now going to describe your own working day. Do this as a blog post on your blog you can find instructions here and create this under My Account. I can’t wait to read your blog posts – I’m sure you’ll get lots of comments and advice.
