Nimmy March – answers to the first gist exercise
1 It is an appeal for more people to come forward and adopt children. It is clear from what Nimmy March says that there are many children who are awaiting adoption. She uses several phrases which indicate this: eg "I know that there are plenty of people out there who would love to adopt a child" suggests they need plenty of people to do so; she mentions ‘loads of children‘ out there, that "there are of course children out there who are waiting to be adopted" as if the shortage of people applying to adopt is well-known. She mentions children out there "who could do with (= need)* new homes."
It is clear there is an urgent need for more adoptive homes.
She uses the phrase "please do it, please do it" which reinforces her message of encouragement to answer this urgent need, and also promises that people who take in groups of siblings will "definitely get a great deal of support". Her appeal to "people from Black and Asian families" reveals there is a particular need for people from these backgrounds, presumably because there are children from those backgrounds who need to be adopted.
*Eg I could do with a new car = I need a new car.
2 Nimmy March mentions that it is National Adoption Week, so the organisation has a particular time slot when they can campaign nationally. There are many of these "Weeks" in the UK, sometimes focussing on physical or mental health issues, on homelessness, rescue organisatin such as the Lifeboat Association, different charities etc.
