The Past Perfect (B)
The past perfect is used a great deal in conjunction with a) the simple past and b) the present perfect.
- a I thought I had given him the doorkey.
- a The clerk gave me my cheque back – I had forgotten to sign it!
- b I have admitted to myself I had never had any intention of helping them move.
- b She has borrowed a book from me which she had not managed to find in the library.
Please put the verbs in brackets in either the simple past or the past perfect. Sometimes more than one version may be possible.
1 He (never know) who (find) his passport.
2 Neither of us (manage) to find the bill the Gas Board (send).
3 Kate (think) it was amusing that Richard (put) petrol into a diesel car!
4 She (miss) her train and (must) to pay for another ticket.
5 They both (smile) at me as if we (meet) before.
6 Until then he (never know) who (found) his passport.
7 Yunis (enjoy) his holiday, but it (be) tiring speaking English all the time.
8 It was a college I (never hear) of.
