The Past Perfect (C)
The past perfect is used a great deal in conjunction with a) the simple past and b) the present perfect.
- a I told him no-one had paid for the tickets.
- a She got her old job back – they had all missed her!
- b They have lent her the money they had saved up for a holiday.
- b We have ended up doing administrative tasks we had none of us agreed to.
Please put the verbs in brackets in either the simple past or the past perfect. Sometimes more than one version may be possible.
a I (know) they (recognise) me the moment I (walk) in the door!
b Rachel (have) no idea who (steal) her iPod.
c When we (see) them it was obvious they (be) on holiday somewhere sunny.
d The film (already begin) when she (arrive) at the cinema.
e All the guests they (invite) (agree) to bring something to eat to the barbecue.
f I couldn’t find the present he (buy) me.
g We (say) we (see) you somewhere before.
h Hardly anybody (come) to Joan’s leaving do because Robina (forget) to send out an email about it.
