The three sentences feature participles:

• Seeing – present participle these are used to set the scene and are quite common in both creative writing and formal essays.

• recorded – passive participle (that has been recorded)

  these give more information about a noun, here the ‘day’ the writer remembers.

   

• Remembering – present participle/gerund

  used to express a result – here the photo has set off the memories which are both wonderful and as we find out at the end painful

The use of these participles is economical – good for the short poem – and helps to ‘paint a picture’

Without all the other words in the clause there is more emphasis placed on these words and this makes them more effective in creating ideas and emotions.
