Place names with and without ‘the’ – B

We do not usually use ‘the’ before:

• institutions such as schools, hospitals, churches, etc when talking about the purpose they were made for:

He’s back at school. Jane’s in hospital. Dad’s at church

• institutions such as schools, hospitals, churches, etc when they have a place-name attached:

Dunscroft Junior School Hull University Lincoln Cathedral

We do use ‘the’

• before schools, hospitals, synagogues etc when describing them as places

We visited the local mosque, the school and then the nearest hospital.

• before the names of banks, post offices, hotels, garages, museums, airports etc without a place-name attached

Is it close to a / the bank / post office / garage / supermarket?

• before names using ‘of’:

the Isle of Wight the Bank of England the Cape of Good Hope
