Place names with and without ‘the’ – C

We do not usually use ‘the’ before:

  • the names of mountains, lakes, islands and particular places

Ben Nevis; Mount Kilimanjaro; Lake Ontario; Easter Island; Bristol; Cardiff

  • palaces, castles, churches, universities and schools, stations, parks, zoos and airports

Buckingham Palace; Richmond Castle; St. John’s Church; Liverpool University; Felixstowe Primary School; Central Station; Hyde Park; Edinburgh Zoo; Teeside Airport

  • streetnames

New Bridge Street; Pilgrim Street; Park Road

We do not use ‘the’

  • before people’s names, even with a title

Mr and Mrs Smith; Andrew and Mary; Dr Wood; Reverend Hill; Bishop Ambrose

We do use ‘the’

  • before the names of mountain ranges, deserts, seas and rivers

the Cairngorms; the Gobi Desert’ the Baltic Sea; the Thames

  • often before the names of museums, galleries, libraries, and hotels, particularly if the word museum / hotel is included in the name

the Ashmoleum Museum; the National Portrait Gallery; the Bodleian Library; the New Kent Hotel

  • usually before cinemas and theatres*

the Rex; the National

  • If we refer to two or more people by their family name

The Chapmans, the Marshalls and the Gilberg brothers are coming.
(ie Ron and Ann Chapman; both Sally and Julie Marshall, Tom and Stephen Gilberg)

* with some very famous theatres we do not use ‘the’
