Wet Day

 

It began to rain last night at eleven

and was still going strong this morning at seven.

It has saturated the flower beds

leaving droopy stalks and bowing heads.

There’s a pool where the patio used to be

and it’s continued filling up steadily.

Got soaked on the school run, then soaked again

when I took the dog for a walk at ten.

The beck that winds gently through the wood

was a raging torrent of debris and mud.

The golf course had developed an enormous lake

happily occupied by a duck and drake.

The surface water ran on and on

and by midday the rain had still not gone.

By half past two it was pouring, still

and I thanked our luck that we live on a hill.

And still the skies were heavy with rain

as school-run time came round again.

Change of clothes number 3 for the day!

When will this vile stuff go away?

It rained all night, and morning, and afternoon.

Now we know why this month’s called ‘flaming June’!
