A bunch of friends = a group of friends
to know of sth / so – phrasal verb – to have heard of someone or something and be able to give a small amount of information about them.
The phrase ‘not that I know of‘ is used when answering a question to mean that, judging from the information you have, the answer is no:
"Is she incompetent as a manager? " "Not that I know of."
to gel – verb used of people or a team spirit – to form a good relationship, become friends or good colleagues who work well together
to put a lot of effort in – to spend a lot of time or effort doing something
grumpy – adj – easily annoyed and complaining
to know what you’re getting into – to understand what you are tackling, to understand what the demands are / will be
take sth / so for granted – not to appreciate or show that you are grateful / fortunate that you benefit from sth / so
come in over budget – to overspend
to take a back seat – to choose not to be in a position of responsibility in an organization or activity
to pass up an opportunity – phrasal verb – to fail to take advantage of an opportunity
to deal with sth- Annie uses a phrase ‘if something came up we just dealt with it‘. To deal with sth means to manage / tackle sth. Here it means ‘we were flexible enough /capable enough to be able to deal with sth unexpected’.
‘Just deal with it‘ has an element of encouraging someone to be proactive when faced with sth unexpected, not to be anxious but positive about your abilities.
