Recognising a heart attack – key and notes
Look out for:
– a vice-like chest pain, spreading to the person’s left arm
– breathlessness
– discomfort, like indigestion
– sudden faintness
– a sense of impending doom
– ashen skin
– blueness around the lips
– a rapid, then weakening pulse
– a sudden collapse
What to do, and what not to do!
– Do not give the person any fluids!
– If the patient becomes unconscious, be prepared to resuscitate him if necessary.
– Dial 999 to call an ambulance, unless a doctor is already on the scene.
– Monitor the person’s breathing and pulse.
– Give him or her an aspirin, and ask him / her to chew it slowly.
Tricky spellings: unconscious, resuscitate – a few ‘s‘s to forget if you’re not careful! Necessary is sometimes misspelt, too!
Pronunciation: did you recognise the pronunciation of the noun ‘breath‘ in breathlessness?
Stress: did you notice the word discomfort was stressed on the same syllable as in comfort?
Punctuation: the person‘s left arm, the person‘s breathing
Grammar: Notice how in instructions the word ‘the‘ is used more than it would be in normal speech. Eg Monitor the person’s breathing.
