Reporting what has been said (a)

"I want to go to Germany."
"I am hoping to go to Germany."

There are two ways to tell someone else something you said.
1) Direct speech
a) "I want to go to Germany," I said. or
b) I said, "I want to go to Germany."
2) Reported speech
c) I said I want / I wanted to go to Germany.

1) Direct speech
d) "I am hoping to go to Germany," I said. or
e) I said, "I am hoping to go to Germany."
2) Reported speech
f) I said I am hoping / was hoping to go to Germany.

The verb often changes to the past, because usually we are talking about something that was said in the past.

am / is >was can >could
are >were will >would
has / have >had do / want /know >did / wanted / knew etc

You meet your friend Jane who says:

1 "I have a new car!"
2 "I’m going on holiday soon."
3 "My parents are coming with me."
4 "They enjoy self-catering holidays. "
5 "They know Wales well. "
6 "They don’t often manage to get away. "
7 "They don’t always know where to go. "
8 "They can’t help out financially, unfortunately. "
9 "I will have to pay for everything. "
