Rising food prices "global crisis"
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says rising food prices have become a global crisis.
Concerns about food security have mounted, with rice prices hitting records in Asia.
Rice from Thailand, the world’s top exporter, is still being quoted at over $1000 a tonne, despite a three percent fall by rice futures contracts on the Chicago Board of Trade.
The U.N. has warned that staples are getting more expensive for the world’s poor. Ban gave his warning to reporters in Vienna on Friday (25th April, 2008).
