‘For’ and ‘since’ with the present perfect continuous – A

We use both ‘for’ and ‘since’ to say how long something has been happening.

We use for

• when we say a period of time – an hour, two weeks, etc

I’ve been waiting for an hour (= from an hour ago until now).
She hasn’t seen her boss for nearly a month (= from nearly a month ago up until now).
He’s been working in Liverpool for the summer.

We use since

• when we say the start of a period of time – 9 o’clock, Wednesday, 2001, etc

I’ve been waiting since 9 o’clock (= from 9 o’clock until now).
She hasn’t seen her boss since last Tuesday.
He’s been working in Liverpool since February (= from February up until now).
