‘For’ and ‘since’ – B

We use both for and since to say how long something has been happening.

We use for

  • when we say a period of time – 20 minutes, three days, a month, etc

I’ve been cooking for days. (= from a few days ago until now).
She hasn’t seen her grandmother for over a week. (= from more than a week ago up until now).
They’ve been travelling round Moravia for a fortnight.

We use since

  • when we say the start of a period of time – 9 o’clock, Wednesday, 2001, etc

She’s been at primary school since last September. (= since last September until now).
We haven’t heard from them since 2005.
They’ve been travelling round Moravia since late July.
He’s been unemployed since last year. (= from last year up until now).
