Sods Law!
I started this blog a couple of weeks ago about the little things that go wrong in life. When this happens we often say ‘sods law’!
The blog I started was about a journey I made where I ran out of petrol and (being Sunday and in the country) no petrol stations were open! It was an elaborately worked piece with lots of good language and some very (I thought) amusing sentences. I was very pleased indeed with this first edition of my blog! When I came to post it something went wrong and the whole thing disappeared into a ‘black hole’! Sods law!!! I hadn’t the heart to start again – until now!!!!

The curse of the inanimate object! |
One of the biggest frustrations in life is the endless tussle with inanimate objects – especially those of an electrical nature. The biggest tyrant in our house seems to be the dishwasher. It has a mind of its own and knows instinctively when we are under pressure and decides, at that point, to misbehave!
Such was a day on Wednesday. With several deadlines looming, I set it off so that I would be able to unload and reload at a specific time thus allowing plenty of time to complete my work. At the appointed time, said dishwasher had not released the soap tablet and therefore nothing was clean. After a few expletives I set it off again. An hour or so later expecting all to be sparkling, I opened up the dishwasher to discover that it had decided not to rinse properly and everything was covered with a fine white powder. With a great deal of banging and clattering and much ‘blue’ air, I hauled the whole lot (plus the next load) into the sink and washed them all by hand!!! Thank heavens for flexible deadlines!!!!!

Sometimes those little important, yet not urgent jobs get put off again and again, but beware – they have a bad habit of rearing up suddenly and attacking you!! |
Such was the case with my car key. It is one of those with a remote button for opening the door. About 18 months ago (yes – 18!!) the battery on the remote died and I kept meaning to get it replaced, but, for one reason and another, didn’t. Today was the day for this little oversight to rear its ugly head. The key, I guess, wasn’t really designed to open and shut the car on a long term basis as today it snapped in half right outside the school at picking up time. I managed to hail a friend to take me home for the spare. Back at school we got into the car and put the spare in the ignition – the car died – several attempts later – no luck – the car refused resolutely to start. Somewhere in the back of my brain an awareness began to dawn of a previous time when we experienced this same thing and realised that the spare had not been activated to ‘communicate’ with the car, and yes, another of those important but not urgent jobs didn’t get done!! So, we had to walk the mile home – not too bad (except for the stuff we had to carry) and my daughter graciously announced that it had been a lovely walk – which of course it was along a beautiful country lane.
