Subject and object questions with who and what (d)
We can use one word answers in both subject and object questions with who and what:
Who gives you your salary? Malcolm.
What happens every Friday, usually? Nothing.
Who did she complain about? Us.
What did she say? Nothing.
We can use an auxiliary verb in the answer to a subject question:
Who had mushroom soup? We all did.
Who gives you your salary? Malcolm Baker does.
What happens every Friday, usually? Nothing much does.
Who has ordered the drinks? James has.
Who gave you this present? Mike did.
We cannot use an auxiliary verb in the answer to an object question.
How many presents did you have for your birthday? Several.
Who does she work with? Two lawyers.
What does he earn? About £15,000 a year.
What did you expect? Something a bit better.
