In context:
The opening few bars of music which you hear are from ‘Dance’ 1 written by George Lloyd and 2 performed by the violinist Tasmin Little, who is one of the 3 top classical musicians in Britain. She is taking her lead from the rock group Radiohead by offering her new album entitled 4 ‘The Naked Violin‘ 5 free of charge.
She has a plan to take her CD on tour around the country; she has had what she describes as a 6 fantastic, crazy wacky idea to hire a tepee and go around the country 7 trying to interest people in classical music who might 8 otherwise never think about it.
Part of her plan is to release it 9 as a free download which should be available on Monday the 14th (January) and will comprise 3 pieces which are 10 very different from each other.
The main difference between Tasmin Little’s CD and most other CDs is that it concentrates on the violin (as an instrument) rather than on 11 a particular composer. Ms Little explains that if you know you like a certain composer such as Bach or Mozart, you can buy a CD from a shop, and there’s no problem, but that unfortunately, if you have no idea what you like and you buy it, then put on one track and think ‘oh dear, 12 this really isn’t for me‘, then that’s it, 13 you’ve had it.
Tasmin Little says that the violin is 14 such a versatile instrument, and it has had 15 300 years of amazing music written for it. In her download the violin will be the 16 focal point of attention and 17 she will show people how different it can sound according to which composer wrote for it.
When Radiohead released their download they didn’t charge people 18 ‘as such’, people could pay what they thought the CD was worth.
With classical music Tasmin considers there is enough perception of a barrier still for it to be necessary to remove 19 every single barrier. She believes that then there will then be firmly no excuse other than having a closed mind for not listening to this sort of music , that it may be that people 20 can’t be bothered or because they don’t have an open mind, but this opportunity will mean there is no other reason not to have access to classical music.
For a long time people have fired criticism at classical musicians for being inaccessible or 21 apparently elitist. She has 22 had enough of that and she wants to show people classical musicians don’t want to be inaccessible, they want people to listen and enjoy it, 23 otherwise what’s the point?
This is going to be her 24 first new recording in 4 years.
How is she going to 25 make a lot of money out of it?
(The answer is – she isn’t! That’s not the point!)
