*Jesse Owens, the grandson of a slave, won 4 gold medals at the 1936 Olympics, discrediting Adolf Hitler’s claims of the superiority of the Aryan race. On the death of Jesse Owens on March 31, 1980 President Carter declared "Perhaps no athlete better symbolized the human struggle against tyranny, poverty and racial bigotry."
