Thursday – Day 4 – Reading

Today we are going to start looking at reading.
You will find the first reading test on the right. Try to do this in 1 hour but if you need longer don’t worry just tell your teacher how long it took and make a note of how far you were able to get in the hour.
With the reading start with the title and any sub-tutles or headings to get a feel for the topic.
Then skim the first paragraph (tiy should now have a good overview of the text) and move on to the questions
Like the listening, many of these question work on key words so make sure you spend most of your time on the questions rather than the text and underline the key words.
There will be two of these:
- location key words – these help you to find the right place in the text they will often be names, numbers, or words connected with the topic.
- content key words these will help you to find the correct answer – pay attention to words like most, many, everyone, nobody etc.. these are usually important – be careful also of negatives these need a little more atttention and the text and question will often be the opposite of each other.
Now work through each question quickly ( you only have 1 minute per question) if you are not sure make a note of your best answer and move on – you can come back later and look again.
There are three times when you can check your answers again:
- at the end of the passage
- at the end of the test
- while you transfer your answers
When you get your answers back from the teacher go over the test again and check any mistkes – it’s really important to find the correct answers however long it takes.
If you can’t understand why an answer is wrong then email your teacher and ask them to explain.
Good luck with the redaing and really focus on those questions.
