Some verbs with particles don’t have objects:

  • Sit down!

  • Look out!

If the verb is followed by an adverb particle and an object, the particle usually follows the object:

  • He put the biscuits back in the cupboard.

  • They gave these questionnaires out.

  • (This one could also be: They gave out these questionnaires.)

  • We can’t put the clock back*.

 

(*to put / turn the clock back = to change history)
