Visitor ban

Nov 25 – A member of the European Parliament has been banned from visiting the family home of a jailed human rights activist.

Hu Jia was arrested in December 2007 as part of a crackdown on dissidents by the Chinese government.

He is now serving a three-and-a-half-year sentence for subverting state power after giving interviews to foreign media and publishing articles online.

His wife and daughter live in Beijing under virtual house arrest.

Liz Kennedy reports.
