Notice that ‘as‘ is less definite a point in time than ‘when’. As gives the idea of a period of time over which something takes place. Eg As people come in they are offered a cup of tea – here as means whenever, at whatever time

English often gets rid of a noun by using a verb (= by the use of a verb). It helps to make language smoother and more elegant.

18 X is a superb instance of this – of which X (Saltwell Park) is a prime example. Notice the word order!

Be careful of the use of hence. Eg I’ve a rehearsal in an hour, hence my haste = that is the reason why I am in a hurry / so I am in a hurry as a consequence.
