Writing introductions Task 2 – lesson 29
Here are three essays. Read them and then write a introduction for each of them. Look at how the essay progresses and then try and get your introduction to act as a signpost for this.
Essay 1
For example, in my school days I was the best in academics but when it came to my personal and professional life it was not of great help. The practical aspects like time management, teamwork and interpersonal skills which I learnt from my family and friends helped me a lot to cope in my job and personal life. It is obvious from this example that practical aspects are more important compared to academic education. Many rich people nowadays had not even finished their education in school. They all have started their business ventures without education and have achieved great success in their fields. These people have gained the practical skills by means of experience.
Academic education has its own merits. If a woman in a family is academically strong she can teach her children easily. The literature rate in a country will increase if people attend school. In India, Kerala is one of the states where literature rate is high and it is one of the well developed states in our country. Therefore, I think for the development and economic growth of a country academic education is important.
Although, practical aspects can be learnt by experience if schools start to educate the children about these, they can face the world in a bold manner. Therefore, I think schools in addition to academic education should also emphasise and educate the children about the practical skills for the well-being of society.
Essay 2
On one hand, smoking banned in public places is beneficial to passive smokers who acquire diseases due to people smoking around them. For example in India, this has lead to massive reduction in smoking related diseases like tuberculosis and lung cancer. There is a saying called ‘Prevention is better than cure’. Following this principle, India is spending funds to impose laws that ban smoking and in creating awareness instead of paying out to drugs that cure these diseases. In Companies, productivity has increased since most of the time is used efficiently and effectively. Air pollution has come down and the incidence of infertility for which one of the main reasons is smoking has also reduced.On the other hand, the nature of human psychology is that when we attempt to control someone, they will overdo it. Youngsters and teenagers will try to explore believing that this is their right and therefore leads to behavioural and addiction problems. In order to protect their rights, governments can build secluded areas especially meant for smoking to safeguard both the environment and the human rights. This is already in vogue in many of the developed countries.To conclude, in my opinion, smoking which is detrimental to the society should be banned by implementing laws and educating the public through media and newspapers. I disagree with the fact that it curbs the freedom of an individual.
Essay 3
Firstly, it is clear that mystery and suspense are often the key elements in the story. For example, CSI programmes usually display a committed crime with grotesque body parts and left-over blood at the scene. With the help of DNA testing equipment, evidence is produced and used to solve the crime. Thus, it can be seen positively that viewers do gain knowledge about criminology and the scientific methods of solving crimes.
Secondly, it is obvious that crime dramas depict the dark side of an offender’s twisted personality as well as the other side of the police’s determination to capture the wrong-doer. For instance, the proven success of Crimewatch, which is broadcast over Singapore’s TV channel monthly, re-enacts crime cases to show how the criminals are being arrested and brought to justice. Almost every household enjoys how the case unfolds, including mine. Therefore, it is not difficult to understand why the general public benefit from these shows by becoming more aware about crime.
To sum up, the suspense and actions of the police shown in the dramas do have positive effects on the viewers. It is expected that crime dramas will continue to appeal to all generations.
