Is this the end of literacy?

Nearly one of every four residents of Sullivan County is functionally illiterate. In Orange and Ulster counties, about 20 percent of the county can’t read or write well enough to get by.

More than half of the eighth-graders in our region did not meet state reading standards as recently as two years ago.

One in every 10 American adolescents reads below his or her grade level – a trend that’s been getting worse, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
